Export Pallets: Your Expert Guide

October 23, 2019

Pallets are an integral part of the transport and logistics industry, allowing transport of goods over long distances. Expanding into export markets requires a partnership with a reliable pallet supplier that is able to deliver an outstanding service at affordable pricing, while understanding the requirements and regulations related to export.

Let’s look at the different points in our export pallets guide:

Size

While the Australian standard pallet size is 1165mm x 1165mm, there is no global standard for pallet sizes, which means that the local standard size may not be accepted in the targeted export market, so your business might lose on a competitive edge.

Australia is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which supports 6 standard pallet sizes at the moment.

For reference, these are the standard dimensions in certain countries:

US Export Pallets: 1,217 x 1,017mm

Euro Export Pallets: 1,200 x 800mm

UK Export Pallets: 1,200 x 1,000mm

Asian Export Pallets: same as Australia (1165mm x 1165mm)

ISPM 15 regulations

This is the international standard that protects local ecosystems from foreign pests being transported from a country to another, by treating wooden pallets to destroy these potential threats. Local pallets manufacturers and suppliers stamp the treated pallets with a mark of compliance, which is required for a shipment to clear customs in the destination country.

Untreated pallets would risk quarantine in the destination country, so this could delay the shipment for extended periods.

Plastic pallets

These pallets are easily cleaned and sterilised, since they are not organic in nature, and do not require heat treatment, these are also lighter in weight and more durable, however they are more expensive yet a practical and popular choice for Australian export businesses.

We went through extensive research into the various international standards in different countries in order to ensure out customer will benefit from our learnings of the importance of pallets compliance.
